Turning the timber correctly will leave a nice smooth surface. However, to get our timber ready for the final finish we must still carry out some sanding of the surface

The following rules should be followed while sanding on the lathe:

  • The lathe speed should be lowered to about 300-500 rpm to avoid burning
  • The tool rest must be removed to avoid
    coming in contact with it
  • Use both hands to support the abrasive paper
  • Always sand under the piece so any dust or abrasize is thrown clear from the user
  • Always wear a dust mask while sanding on the lathe
  • Use progressively smoother Abrasive Paper grits: 120->180->240
