There are many different tools which can be used to turn wood.
However only a few main types are needed to accomplish almost any design we may want to produce.

Bevel:
Unlike normal chisels, turning tools are ground down to only one angle. This ground section is called the tool's "bevel". To allow the turning tool to cut cleanly its bevel must always be in contact with the work piece.
