The tool lends it's name to the way it is ground. It is usually ground to a cutting angle of 30 degrees while the cutting edge itself has a skewed angle of about 70 degrees at the end

It is most useful for turning long cylindrical or cone shaped sections of a work piece. This is known as parallel turning and taper turning. However, with practice can be used to form beads, V cuts anf part off timber.

The trick to using the skew chisel successfully is to always:

  • Hold the chisel slightly over on its edge (not resting on its flat)
  • Make sure the chisel's bevel rubs the workpiece for a smooth cut
  • Only cut with the bottom half of the cutting edge to avoid 'dig ins'
