It is most useful for turning long cylindrical or cone shaped sections of a work piece. This is known as parallel turning and taper turning. However, with practice can be used to form beads, V cuts anf part off timber. | ![]() |

The trick to using the skew chisel successfully is to always:
- Hold the chisel slightly over on its edge (not resting on its flat)
- Make sure the chisel's bevel rubs the workpiece for a smooth cut
- Only cut with the bottom half of the cutting edge to avoid 'dig ins'
