The Wood Lathe can be a dangerous machine if not used properly. Below are some of the main procedures that should be followed while using the lathe:

__________________________________

Only one person should be at the lathe at any time.

A clear exclusion zone should be placed around the machine and only this person should be allowed in the zone

__________________________________

To avoid any entanglement with the machine, no loose clothing or jewellery should be worn whilst operating. Long hair should be tied back and covered

A FULL faceguard should be worn while operating the machine to avoid getting hit by chips and waste material

A protective apron or lab coat should be worn to protect clothes and uniforms from wood chips and dust

Most Woodturning Lathes we find in schools do not have a dust extracter to remove dust from the work.

To avoid inhaling any harmful material while sanding on the lathe, we should always wear a some form of respatory equipment such as a dusk mask etc.

Woodturning lathes must turn at different speeds to operate safely.
