Wood turning uses a machine called a lathe to make cylindrical or bowl shaped objects in wood.

The first lathes invented used a flexible wooden pole with a cord attached to it.  The user pulled the cord using a foot lever which rotated the work piece allowing it to be shaped by the user's tools.

Nowadays we use electrically powered lathes to shape wood. These lathes range in different shapes and sizes depending on what they are going to be used for

The lathes we come across in our schools will look something like the one to the right:

With most wood working machinery, such as table saws and mortisers, the cutting tool rotates rapidly while the wood stays stationary.

However, the wood turning lathe is unique in that the wood rotates rapidly while the cutting tool stays stationary!
