Scrapers are used almost only for face plate work and bowl turning. They are pressed into the work piece and use a 'scraping' action to cut away the wood. This process leaves a rough finish but is essential for hollowing out deep bowls or containers.

The scraper has a simple rectangular profile with a range of different shaped ends. The most common being a half round shape like we can see here.

Scrapers should only ever be used pointing downwards from the rotating work piece. Thus if the scraper 'catches' the work piece it can simply bounce off

If pointing upwards, the tool may 'dig in' resulting in the handle being thrown upwards at the user
