Face plate turning is a style of turning in which the material is attached to a steel plate (Faceplate) that rotates on the lathes head stock.
There is no need for the tail stock during face plate turning

The two main tools used during face plate work are:
The bowl gouge is used to shape the outside of bowls and make deep cuts to remove waste material |
The scraper is used to hollow out the inside of deep bowls where the gouge cannot reach. Scrapers can be ground to specific shapes to form these shapes on face plate work | ![]() |
